How to attain the ideal body weight? Today, there are many methods introduced to lose weight, i.e. by taking herbal brew, sauna, liposuction, and doing diet. Food diet is one of diets people often choose. An example of well-known diet that many people start applying is diet that based on blood types. Would this kind of diet work?

Diet is a habit in taking foods and drinks allowed to be consumed by someone everyday specially designed to achieve particular goal by consuming or disposing certain foods. Meanwhile, blood is the liquid circulating through heart, arteries, capillaries, and vena that bring food substances and oxygen to all body cells. Blood functions to transport O2 and CO2, to generate blood clotting, to maintain the balance of acid and base and as an immunity system for the body. Blood types categorizations established by Karl Landsteiner are the ABO system and rhesus system which are well recognized and most used. The ABO system consists of blood type A, blood type B, blood type AB and blood type O, while the rhesus system consists of rhesus positive and rhesus negative. In diet based on blood type, the one to be concerned is the ABO system.

Diet based on blood type was stated by Dr. Peter J. D’Adamo, a naturopathic from Stamford, Connecticut, US based on the research and experiences from his patients. There is this saying ‘nothing is perfect’ referring that all researches conducted always have their plus and minus. So does this diet that based on blood types. This diet has quite many followers but D’Adamo’s theory is still controversial among nutritionists and other experts. The success of this kind of diet depends on the condition and the need of the doer. It aims to promote healthy body.

The blood type diet observed by D’Adamo shows the physiologist effect from lectin that gets inside the body. It is a protein can usually be found in foods. Every types of food can affect the metabolism and blood composition so that it influences the balance of immunity since the blood composition has 2 important components, antigen and antibody. The important reason of D’Adamo’s blood classification is because blood types performs identification by examining surface signals which is the antigen, so that when the red blood cells transport strange materials like virus and bacteria, they will then be marked as ‘friends’ or ‘enemies’. The same way happens with the food, if lectin is found, then, it will be marked as enemy causing the blood cells to clot collectively. The blood clotting will trigger problems in digestive system and food metabolism towards insulin production and hormone problems. This is the reason why each blood type requires different food categorizations.

Food categorization is sort into foods with high benefits; neutral foods; and foods to be avoided. Foods that are highly beneficial are foods that react as medicine. Neutral foods are foods that react as meals. Foods to be avoided are foods that react as toxic.

Here are some menu suggestions to consume based on blood types:

Suggested diet for blood type A is foods high in carbohydrates and low in fat.

  • Foods with high benefits: spinach, broccoli, carrots, goldfish mushroom, peanuts, beans, soybean/soybean milk, tofu, tempe, rice flour, blueberries, olive oil, goldfish, sardines.
  • Neutral foods: Tuna, chicken and duck eggs, quail eggs, sesame oil, sunflower seeds, peas, corn, tapioca, wheat bread, pumpkin, shallots, cucumber, taro, grapes, melon, cantaloupe, pears, pomegranate, dates, strawberry, persimmon, guava, chicken.
  • Foods to avoid: meat (cow, duck, rabbit, partridge, lobster, octopus, crab, eels, frogs, prawns, squids), butter, cow milk, cheese, ice cream, pure milk, pickles, eggplant, tomato, sweet potatoes, potatoes, oranges, coconut/coconut milk, melon, honey, banana, papaya, bitter vegetable, soda beverages.
  • Suggested sports: yoga, tai chi, meditation.

Suggested diet for blood type B is milk and dairy

  • Foods with high benefits: sea fish, cow milk, cheese, porridge, wheat, essene bread, rice cakes, broccoli, sweet potatoes, carrots, cauliflowers, eggplants, green tea.
  • Neutral foods: squids, goldfish, tuna, butter, eggs, red beans, beans, rice flour, rice bread, spinach, broccoli, salad, cucumber, pumpkin, potatoes, mustard greens, mangoes, melon, oranges, pears, dates, guava, meat.
  • Foods to avoid: Meat (chicken, pork, duck, slugs, crab, snails, frogs, octopus, lobster), ice cream, eggs (duck, goose, quail), peanuts, wheat bread, tomato, jagung.
  • Suggested sports: swimming, tennis, walking, and meditation.

Diet for blood type AB is according to each individual preference on certain kinds of food.

  • Foods with high benefits: sardines, tuna, goat milk, white egg (chicken), ricotta cheese, sour cream (low calorie), green tea, red wine.
  • Neutral foods: squids, goldfish, tuna, butter, eggs, red beans, beans, rice flour, rice bread, spinach, broccoli, salad, cucumber, pumpkin, potatoes, mustard greens, mangoes, melon, oranges, pears, dates, guava.
  • Foods to avoid: Meat (cow, chicken, duck, pork, goose, lobster, crab, frogs), butter, ice cream, duck eggs, black beans, pickles, corn, star fruit, pomegranate, bitter vegetable, bananas, coconut, persimmon, guava, tomato sauce, coffee, soda beverages, alcohol.
  • Suggested sports: exercise in the morning.

Diet for blood type O is foods high in protein and low carbohydrate.

  • Foods with high benefits: broccoli, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, salad, seaweeds, Chinese radish, blueberries, cherries, guava, Kari spices, pods, red beans, all kinds of shallot and garlic, ginger, kailan, turmeric, beef.
  • Neutral foods: goldfish, eels, lobster, tuna, sardines, prawns, eggs (chicken and duck), butter, beans (black, red, beans, soy), tempe, tofu, soybean milk, wheat porridge, rice, rice cake, wheat flour, eggplants, tomato, pumpkin, chicken, duck.
  • Foods to avoid: pork, squids, cuttlefish, scallops, frogs, octopus, goose eggs, quail eggs, ice cream, cheese, cow milk, yoghurt, coconut oil, turtle, corn oil, corn, broccoli flowers, peanuts, cashew, sunflower seeds, laichi, potatoes, cucumber, cauliflowers, mushroom, cantaloupe, mandarin oranges, bananas, bitter vegetables, white wine, soybean sauce, coffee, alcohol.
  • Suggested sports: aerobic.
