Rhinosinusitis, a Nose Disorder

Rhinosinusitis Nose DisorderThe nose has a very important role for human body especially in the function of olfactory and respiratory. Same to other part of the body, the nose is also vulnerable from various diseases. One of the nose disorders is sinusitis. Though most of them are not dangerous but it somehow may affect and disturb life’s quality.

Sinusitis is an inflammatory at the sinus (cavity) that happens because of allergy or viral infection, bacteria or fungi. Usually, disorder in the sinus is always connected to the nose disorder, that it is now known a term of rhinosinusitis.

Based on the newest classification of AAAI (American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology), rhinosinusitis is classified into 2 groups:

  1. Acute Rhinosinusitis
    Characteristics: it happens less than 2 weeks. It normally happens 4 times a year. But usually, after a therapy is done, the nose membrane will get back to normal.
  2. Chronic Rhinosinusitis
    Characterisctics: it happens more than 2 weeks. Each year, it can happen in 4 times and the membrane or mucosa cannot be back to normal.

The Causes of Rhinosinusitis

The causes are various. Rhinosinusitis is usually caused by asthma, allergy and disorder in the body immune system or disorder in secretion or mucus disposal.

While in acute rhinosinusitis, it can be caused by viral infection, bacteria, fungi, chronic inflammation in the nose tract, certain diseases like immune system disorder and mucus secretion disorder.

The Symptoms of Rhinosinusitis

Certain symptom of sinus disorder is a headache suffered by the patient while waking up every morning. Other symptoms are fever, tiredness, drowsiness, cough and clogged and slimy nose. Teeth cavities can also cause sinusitis especially when it happens at the upper molars. The root of upper molars can go through the base of sinus maxillaries that infection in the teeth can break through the sinus cavity.

The Treatment of Rhinosinusitis

Usually, sinusitis sufferer will be given a medication of antibiotics to control the bacterial infection and pain killer. This drug therapy takes place in 2 weeks minimum. To decrease the clogging and inflammatory, nose spray containing steroid or decongestant can help.

If within 2 weeks, the treatment with drug therapy does no good, so sinus Rontgen or CT scan must be done in order to check the widening area of the disease.

In addition, there are some ways that can be done to lessen those discomforts, such as:

  • Stay in a room with the same temperature.
  • Inhale the haze from a bowl of hot water.
  • Nose spray containing salt liquid.
  • Put cold compress at the sinus with disorder.
  • Avoid the position of bending with the head down since it can increase the pain.
  • Take as much water as you can in order to liquidize the mucus.
